How to Edit SRT and WebVTT Subtitle Files Online

SRT and WebVTT

SRT is the most common subtitle format. WebVTT is the format used by the HTML video element on websites. Both are plain text with a time range and a line of text for each subtitle.

Edit an existing file

Open the Subtitle Editor and import an .srt or .vtt file. Change the text, start time or end time of any line. Add a new line where one is missing, or remove one you do not need with the ✕ button.

Time format

Times are written as HH:MM:SS,mmm for SRT, for example 00:01:02,500. WebVTT uses a dot instead of the comma. WebVTT files may leave out the hours, as in 01:02.500, and the editor reads those too. Fractions can be one to three digits. If you type a time the editor cannot read, it puts the previous value back.

Export

Export as .srt or .vtt. This also works as a converter: import one format and export the other.

Check before you publish

The editor does not warn about overlapping subtitles or an end time that comes before a start time, so play the finished file with your video to confirm the timing.

Privacy

Your subtitle file is edited in your browser and is not uploaded.
