How to Unlock a Password-Protected PDF
Remove the password or restrictions from a PDF you own so you can print, copy or edit it. A clear guide to unlocking a PDF online, and when you should not.
What "unlock" actually means
PDFs can be locked in two ways. An open password stops the file from opening at all until you type it. A permissions password lets anyone open the file but blocks actions like printing, copying text, or editing. Unlocking removes these so the PDF behaves normally again.
Unlock a PDF you own
Open the Unlock PDF tool, upload the file, and download the unlocked copy. This is for documents you own or are allowed to modify, for example removing the print restriction from a statement you received, or clearing an old password before you archive an internal file. It runs in your browser, so the document is not uploaded.
Open password vs permissions
Removing permissions restrictions does not require guessing anything, the restriction is simply cleared. An open password is different: you generally need to know it to open and then re-save the file without it. Unlocking is about lifting restrictions on files you can already access, not about breaking into files you cannot open.
When you cannot and should not unlock
You should only unlock PDFs you own or have permission to change. Do not try to bypass protection on someone else’s confidential document. If you have genuinely lost the password to your own important file, the safest route is to recover it from wherever you saved it, or ask whoever created the file to send an unprotected copy.
After unlocking
Once the restriction is gone you can print, copy, sign, merge, or compress the file like any normal PDF. If you still need it protected for sharing, add a fresh password with the Protect PDF tool once you have finished editing.
A note on privacy
Because unlocking happens on your device, the sensitive file you are clearing is not uploaded to a server. There is no account and no watermark.
